10 May 2026 - By 365 Physiotherapy Dublin

What Are Shin Splints?

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS), commonly called shin splints, causes pain along the inner edge of the shinbone. It is one of the most frequent complaints we see in new runners and those returning after a break.

Who Gets Shin Splints?

  • Runners who have recently increased their training volume
  • Beginners just starting a Couch to 5K programme
  • Runners who have switched to harder surfaces
  • Athletes returning after an injury or long rest period

  • Symptoms

  • Sharp or dull aching pain along the inner shin
  • Pain that starts at the beginning of a run and eases off
  • Pain that returns after running stops
  • Tenderness when touching the shinbone
  • Mild swelling in the lower leg
